PSHE Intent:
At Chaddlewood Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to create a cohesive vision that helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing both mental and physical health, we aim to improve children’s capacity to learn, their resilience and emotional well-being and mental health and thereby enhance their life-chances.
As part of a whole-school approach, lessons are taught weekly and all year groups work on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. The rationale and philosophy underpinning resources is based on mindfulness philosophy and practice, sound psychology and is an evidence-based scheme of learning.
As a response to lockdown, we have supplemented our PSHE offering by taking part in The Blurt Project. This peer-led project focuses on improving the mental health of young people aged 4-24 by equipping them with essential tools to ultimately achieve happier, healthier, and fulfilled lives.
SRE
The Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019, made under sections 34 and 35 of the Children and Social Work Act 2017, make Relationships Education compulsory for all pupils receiving primary education.
Intent:
Chaddlewood Primary and the Governing body have decided that Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) should form part of the school’s Health Education programme because it is an essential part of children’s personal, social, moral and health education and not least, because it encourages an awareness and respect of self and others.
Sex and Relationship Education in our school, will aim to help pupils cope with the physical and emotional challenges of growing up and gives them an elementary understanding of human reproduction. Care and sensitivity have been used in matching teaching as far as possible, to the maturity of the children involved and in answering any questions. Due consideration will be given to any particular religious, cultural or social issues during discussion. Above all, the governors wish to make it clear that sex and relationship education will be taught in such a manner as to encourage children to have due regard to moral consideration and the value of family life. Children will not embark on a programme of sex education involving human reproduction without the prior knowledge of their parents. Should parents wish to exercise their right to withdraw their children from this aspect of Sex Education they should inform the school in writing.
